Sometimes I could feel them coming on, and other times they seemed to appear out of nowhere.

12 Important Scriptures for Overcoming Fear

Power. Love. A Sound Mind.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

God assures us that fear is not from Him. He hasn’t given us a spirit of fear, but He has given us a spirit of POWER, LOVE, and a SOUND MIND. When the enemy tries to lie to us or plant fearful thoughts in our minds, we can be sure that we have these three things.

  • The power to overcome every lie and every scheme he throws at us.
  • The perfect love of Jesus that casts out ALL fear. (Because we trust and rely on Him)
  • The mind of Christ- guarded and filled with the Word of God to measure the lies up against.

God saves.

say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” Isaiah 35:4 NIV

When we feel alone in our trials and nothing seems to be working out for us, we can rest in the truth that God saves. He knows the end from the beginning. Every situation we will ever face–He already knows about. We can press into Him and rely on Him to save us.

God is near.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified or dismayed (intimidated), for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 AMP

God is always near to us. Wherever we go, He is there. We can be confident that He will never leave us or forsake us.

We belong to God.

But now thus says the Lordhe who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. Isaiah 43:1 ESV

We belong to God. How comforting it is to know this truth. He has us covered. He has redeemed us. There is nothing that can take us away from His care.

We have God’s Spirit.

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”Romans 8:15 NLT

We are daughters of the Most High. Bought by the blood of Jesus and adopted into the Kingdom of God as His very own. He has given us His Spirit to dwell within us. We have His power, His blood, and His name to overcome all attacks from the enemy, including the power to overcome fear.

We are perfected in His love.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18 NKJV

God is love. His unconditional love for us casts out any fears we may have. When we fear, we are believing lies over His truth. We have been made perfect in His love by the sacrifice of Jesus. Knowing what He paid for us gives us the confidence and hope in Him to believe His Word to be true. When we hear the lies, we will recognize them as such and cast them down, making them obedient to Christ.

Peace is found in Him.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

When situations arise that may cause us to feel fear, we can bring it before the Lord, thanking Him for who He is, what He’s done before, and telling Him what we need now. He is not bothered by our requests. He is a loving Father that longs to connect with us. It’s in His presence that we find peace and overcome fear.

His Promises.

No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me, ”Says the Lord

Isaiah 54:17 NKJV

This is one of my favorite promises to declare. I speak this almost daily over myself, my family, and friends. There is power in declaring God’s Promises. When we speak these things out loud we are not only speaking against the plan of the enemy but also convincing ourselves that God’s Word is true. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Speaking the Word of God is our faith in action–a sword that pierces through the lies of the enemy. When we declare these scriptures for overcoming fear, it is as if Jesus Himself is speaking them.

Believing for God’s Best.

He will not fear bad news; His heart is steadfast, trusting [confidently relying on and believing] in the LordHis heart is upheld, he will not fear. While he looks [with satisfaction] on his adversaries. Psalm 112:7-8 AMP

The enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy. He wants us to fear what will happen or could happen. But the truth is, God already knows what will happen. We can trust in Him as our Protector. We have no reason to fear. He promises that He works ALL things out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:15) Rather than believing for the worst, we can choose to believe God’s Word–that He has our best interest at heart and will act on our behalf.

God is our Refuge to overcome fear.

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the LordHe alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you,
these evils will not touch you. Psalm 91:1-7 NLT

God is our Refuge. Our safe place is found close to Him. Anything that is going on around us, will not affect us. We can be confident that He is our Shelter and will cover us and protect us. We don’t have to fear what others say, what they will do, what will happen next or anything that could come against us….we are safe in Him.

God is for us.

The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Psalm 118:6 NLT

For years I was afraid of God. I had a wrong view of who He was. I believed the lie that He was ready to hurt me if I messed up. Yet when I began reading the Psalms, I found out His true character. GOD IS FOR US. He is not against us. He tells us that He has plans to prosper us, not plans to harm us. (Jer. 29:11)

God gives us victory.

For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory. Deuteronomy 20:4 NIV

Not only is God with us in the battle, but He gives us victory. When we follow His lead and trust in Him, He provides exactly what we need.
