Holiday Traditions that Leave Legacies

The countdown is on!

There are 8 days until Thanksgiving and less than 6 weeks until Christmas. The holidays are the busiest season in our household, but also provide the most opportunity to celebrate together as a family. Our holidays consist of a plethora of food and a large gathering of family and friends. Yet there is something else that truly makes our holidays memorable.

Traditions.

As I’ve grown into an adult with my own kids, I seek to recreate the memories I had as a child—to bring what my husband and I grew up with into the lives of our children. We want to have traditions. It’s our heritage. When we are old and grey and our kids are grown, we want to hear them sit around and tell their children about the fun things we did as a family every year. Traditions are more than just fun memories, but can become part of the legacy we are passing on.

Holiday traditions not only bring a uniquely tailored experience to celebration, but help us to stay focused on why we are celebrating. With all the excitement we can easily be distracted from the One who has given us a reason to celebrate. This year we are starting a few new traditions that are bringing us closer as a family and allowing us to truly enjoy the individual holidays that are approaching.

  1. Love this as I believe traditions are key to leaving a legacy and building strong bonds in families.

In addition, I have learned to hold them loosely. What traditions I hold to heart may not have as much meaning to those around me. Open conversations are at the heart!

Thanks for the reminder of the importance of leaving lasting and meaningful legacies.

  2. Yes and gratitude reminds us what God’s done – the best thing I can do for my kids is to remind myself outloud what He’s done – more is caught than taught and they’ve heard my complainings too many times! blessings on your family this Thanksgiving! sue

    1. I know what you mean, Sue! It’s amazing how much they pick up from what we say! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  3. I’m really seeing the out working of this now in our family, as our oldest son is beginning to build traditions with his family — and they are so like the ones that he knew here in our home. My heart is very full!

    1. That is awesome, Michele! That’s exactly what I’m hoping for when my kids get married!! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  4. Traditions are so important! There are a few from my childhood that I have done with my kids. I hope my kids keep some of those traditions and pass them on to thier families. And I love your idea to keep a Thanksgiving journal. 🙂

  5. Traditions, even the smallest and simplest typically end up meaning the most. As parents, friends or leaders, what we put in place now can be impactful way beyond our physical time here. Great reminders, thanks Alisa!

  6. Love your post! The holidays are so much fun and are such a meaningful time for my family. My husband and I are excited to start our own family traditions with our kiddos that we both enjoyed when we were growing up. We have already started lists of all of the fun things we want to do together as a family. Thanks for sharing!

    Cheers,
